IMQ: Motorcycle Riders Foundation Announces Legislative Agenda

(LegalLaw247.com, October 27, 2011 ) Asheville, NC -- After its annual Meeting of the Minds, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has announced the legislative agenda that it will pursue in the coming year.

They will monitor the Transportation Equity Act (TEA) Reauthorization for action that would positively/negatively impact motorcycles, motorcycling, and motorcyclists. They will seek continuation of the Motorcycle 2010 Grant Funding program, as well as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations (NHTSA) lobbying ban within individual states.

Additionally, they will seek the continuation of the Motorcycle Advisory Council designed to advise the Federal Highway Administration on motorcycling issues. They will oppose any federal blackmails or sanctions contained in the Highway Bill related to motorcycles.

The MRF will not promote adoption of the SAE sound test as a national enforcement standard, and they will seek reintroduction of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which would require health insurance companies to disclose the list of ''source of injury'' exclusions in the policies they issue.

They will continue successful work to cut off all funding for NHTSA motorcycle-specific checkpoint grants and oppose any federal standard proposing stamping and certifying motorcycle exhaust systems. Along with this, they will continue to monitor EPA sound emissions study and oppose federal agencies encouraging states to take action.

They will oppose all forms of distracted driving and watch closely for motorcycle-specific discrimination. They will continue promotion of a Right to Repair Act. This act would prohibit manufacturers from making technical know-how and equipment necessary for independent shops to work on bikes available only to dealerships. Lastly, they will continue participation at the federal level to define exactly what constitutes a motorcycle.

The list seems long, but the efforts of this group have protected the rights of motorcyclists across the nation for years and, hopefully, for many years to come.
