Dallas Criminal Defense Attorneys of the Law Office of Mark T. Lassiter Discuss New Texas DWI Law

(LegalLaw247.com, November 16, 2011 ) Dallas, TX -- Effective September 1, 2011, new penalties for driving while intoxicated will take effect in the state of Texas. Texas House Bill 1199, signed into law by Governor Rick Perry on June 17th, 2011, increases potential fines and prison time for first-time DWI offenders. Under the new law, drivers with no previous DWI convictions who are found to be operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .15 or higher may be convicted of a Class A misdemeanor. Prior to the implementation of this law, the maximum penalty for all first-time DWI offenders was 180 days in jail and fines of $2000. Now, first-time offenders with a BAC of .15 or higher may face fines of $4000 and up to 1 year in jail.

These increased criminal penalties are part of a broader effort by Texas government and law enforcement agencies to reduce the number of DWI offenses committed in the state. The increased penalties reflect concerns that those with BAC levels significantly above the legal limit may pose an increased injury risk on the road.

These increased penalties and enforcement efforts demonstrate the importance of pursuing legal representation for those who have been accused of DWI. The Dallas criminal defense attorneys of the Law Office of Mark T. Lassiter offer their services to all those who have been accused of DWI to fight this damaging allegation.
