Just as malls, restaurants and other public places have a duty to keep their patrons safe, cruise ships also have a legal responsibility in caring for passengers aboard their vessels. This duty includes running background checks on employees, maintaining adequate security measures on board, and adequately lighting stairwells and other public areas. When a cruise liner fails to provide a reasonably safe environment, passengers who are injured as a result may have legal recourse to seek compensation for damages.
