At the age of one, doctors amputated both her legs beneath the knees and Aimee was soon walking and running on prosthetic legs. At 17 she was one of three people awarded a full scholarship by the Department of Defense and became the youngest person in the world to have gained Pentagon top-level access, she worked there in her summer breaks. In 1996 she became the first amputee to compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association games where she set world records for the 100m, 200m and long-jump. Like many other young leaders she has studied in many countries, in Pakistan, America and Great Britain. Her first book, Whispers of the Desert, was an intricate collection of poems which first launched her to her current fame. Her second book, 8:50 a.m. 8 October 2005 was also received with much critical acclaim. She currently writes columns for The Daily Beast, New Statesman and other publications around the world. Fatima resides with her Step-Mother at the famous residence 70 Clifton Road in Old Clifton, Karachi.

Salman Khan, from America, was a hedge-fund analyst who holds three degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: a BS in mathematics, a BS in electrical engineering and computer science, and an MS in electrical engineering and computer science as well as a MBA from Harvard Business School. In 2006 he started to tutor his cousin in mathematics over the internet, using Yahoo's Doodle Notepad. Soon others were asking for his help so he set up a YouTube account for his tutorials. In 2009 he quit his job and set up the Khan Academy, a free online tutoring service available to all. His YouTube channel currently has over 250,000 subscribers. Khan has been featured on the The Colbert Report, PBS NewsHour, CNN and National Public Radio. He lives with his wife, who is a medical specialist in rheumatology and internal medicine, and their son in Mountain View, California.

Denis Minev, a Stanford University graduate with a Wharton MBA living in the middle of the Amazon rainforest is another new member of the select group. He has been dedicated to environmental conservation and poverty alleviation in the Brazilian Amazon, an area equivalent to more than half of the US. His work has taken him to the state government (as Secretary for Planning) to the founding of two NGOs and serving on the boards of several more. During his time in the Amazonas state government, deforestation rates fell by more than 50% while economic growth actually accelerated. He helped set up the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation, the Museum of the Amazon, as well as the Governors Climate and Forests Task Force (a partnership with California and Indonesia), all organizations focused on improving living conditions of the more than 20 million people who inhabit the Amazon while taking care of the environment.

These four young leaders will join other 188 young global leaders of 2012 and become part of the Forum of Young Global Leaders community of 713 outstanding individuals. They will convene at the Annual Summit to be held on the 14-18 April in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

All Young Global Leaders have already proven themselves to be actively engaged in improving their community and will now be integrated into events organized by the World Economic Forum and encouraged to launch their own initiatives and task forces, on their own or with other Young Global Leaders to further change the world for the better.
