Miami Attorney John H. (Jack) Hickey Obtains $1.16 Million Settlement After Police Car Kills Mother of Three

(LegalLaw247.com, April 24, 2012 ) Miami, FL -- On February 28, 2009 at about 5:30 AM, a Miami-Dade Police Officer was speeding on dark residential street in North West Dade in a police cruiser when it ran a stop sign and crashed into the vehicle driven by Anayency Velasquez.

The officer was engaged in a high speed chase. The speed and force of the cruiser pushed the Ms. Velasquezs car into a house on the intersection. The crash killed Ms. Velasquez, who leaves behind her two sons, eight-year-old Steven and four-year-old Robert, and her daughter, three-year-old Ashley. The personal representatives of Ms. Velasquezs estate retained Miami injury attorney John H. (Jack) Hickey against Miami-Dade County.

On November 17, 2010, the case settled for $1,160,000.00. The County paid $150,000 after settlement and agreed not to actively support a claims bill asking the legislature to approve payment of the remaining $1,010,000. On March 29, 2012, a claims bill for the $1,010,000 was approved by the Governor of Florida. Out of the over one thousand claims bills presented to the Florida legislature this year, this is one of only eight that were approved.
