The UCLA Primary Health clinic at URM, a state licensed Community Health Center, was established in 1983. The clinic is nurse-managed and helps people with common ailments like colds and flu along with help controlling the more advanced needs of illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The clinic provides services at no charge for over 6,000 patients each year.
Homeless people often do not have access to basic hygiene supplies such as toothpaste which can quickly lead to cavities, gum disease and severe pain. The partnership with the USC School of Dentistry has helped alleviate much suffering! Faculty, students and interns assist about 5,000 people each year at the Mission providing cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions, root canals and dentures.
The struggle to overcome homelessness can be daunting and many fail in the process. The Pepperdine Mental Health Clinic provides psychological assistance to more than 1,000 men, women and children each year. It is staffed by doctoral students from Pepperdine University and is overseen by a Pepperdine Clinical Psychologist.
In addition to their health needs, homeless people often find themselves unintentionally on the wrong side of the law. The Pepperdine Legal Aid Clinic’s lawyer and student law clerks help people needing legal advice by providing counseling, assistance in resolving tickets and warrants, preparation of court paperwork, attempt to have criminal convictions dismissed, application for government benefits, tax controversy assistance and preparation for homeless court.
