Calcitonin salmon is a man-made version of the hormone calcitonin that is found in salmon. Medical professionals will often prescribe these products to patients with osteoporosis and Paget’s disease. Some calcitonin products include Novartis AG’s Miacalcin injection and nasal spray and Unigene Laboratories Inc's nasal spray.
The FDA is questioning how effective calcitonin salmon is in reducing fractures in the treatment of osteoporosis. Next week, the agency will decide whether or not to allow these products to continue to be marketed.
Last year, European regulators recommended that patients not use calcitonin salmon long-term after a review found evidence of an increased risk of cancer after long-term use. In addition, they recommended that the products should only be used for short-term use in Paget's disease and excess calcium in the blood caused by cancer. However, the regulators ruled that the benefits of calcitonin-containing medications did not outweigh their risks in the treatment of osteoporosis.
