Study: Cost of Splitting Up is Top Concern for Divorcing Couples

(LegalLaw247.com, August 17, 2013 ) Dallas, TX -- Avvo surveyed 890 of their consumer users and 447 attorneys in June, and found that the cost of divorce is the biggest concern for the majority of respondents without children. Other top concerns were property division, the length of time it would take to divorce and the stipulations on alimony.

For couples with children, however, cost is second only to custody concerns, which was cited by 53 percent of respondents with children. Leigh McMillan, vice president of marketing at Avvo says that the average divorce costs roughly $15,000, it’s not wonder why it’s such a big factor for people facing divorce, however, she and the rest of the team at Avvo were surprised at how significant that concern is.

In July, a study by a UK Law firm also showed that the cost of splitting up was one of the top 10 reasons couples decided to stay together and try to work things out. In another study, by Kansas State University, researchers found that couples who argue about money, especially early in their relationships, often end in divorce.
