Haunted New Mexico State Penitentiary Offers Halloween Tours Reports Phillips Law Group

(LegalLaw247.com, October 05, 2013 ) SANTA FE, NM – The New Mexico State Penitentiary has opened its gates for tours in time for thrill seekers and historians to tour the haunted facility before Halloween.

In 1980, one of the nation’s deadliest prison riots took place at the correctional facility resulting in the death of 33 inmates and causing injuries to 200 inmates. During this riot 12 officers taken hostage were also killed, while seven were treated for injuries caused by rapes and beatings.

The main unit of the penitentiary was closed in 1998 and is now called the Old Pen. This area was opened for tours for the first time in February 2012. These tours become so popular that the corrections department decided to open the facility for tours once again on Friday.

All money from the ticket sales will be used to turn the Old Pen into a museum.
