More than 700,000 women have undergone the procedure to get the permanent birth control system inserted into their fallopian tubes and over 800 have reported adverse events to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Approved in 2004, Essure is a permanent birth control system that works by creating scar tissue that will block the fallopian tubes after the device is inserted. During clinical trials involving 745 women more than 3 percent of women experienced some type of adverse event.
Some common side-effects women are reporting to the FDA include:
• Excessive Bleeding
• Pain
• Unexpected Pregnancy
• Coil Migration & Embedment
• Fallopian Tube Perforation
• Rashes
Many patients who experienced such side-effects had to undergo hysterectomies in order to remove the device, a procedure many were avoiding.
When the FDA approved the device it was given preemptive status which means the manufacturer cannot be sued. However, many women are trying to get the device removed from the market so that no one else will have to suffer through such an ordeal.
