I-10 in Arizona – The 150-mile stretch from Phoenix to California sees an average of 85 deaths each year, according to i10Accidents.com, while the entire average of auto accident fatalities in the state is 700 per year.
I-26 in South Carolina – The Charleston Post and Courier has identified I-26 as the most deadly road in the state. This newspaper reported that between 2000 and 2010, 325 people died in 286 wrecks on this strip, while the paper analyzed crash data on a few short sections of the interstate that found double that death rate in busier intersections near Charleston.
Highway 550 in Colorado – The 25-mile stretch connecting Ouray and Silverton is 11,000 feet above sea level. In some areas of this road there are no guardrails in order to remove snow and avalanche debris. This section also offers no shoulder, leading to many vehicles plunging down the side of the mountain.
Highway 2 in Montana – Montana has the highest fatality rate in the United States, while it takes an average of 80 minutes for an ambulance to transport an accident victim to the hospital. This stretch is in a very remote part of the state where drivers tend to drive faster, increasing their chance of accidents.
U.S. 431 in Alabama – In this 16-mile stretch there have been 20 deaths between 1999 and 2010 due to traffic density and limited visibility, thus the Readers Digest has labeled this as one of the most dangerous roads in America.
Dalton Highway in Alaska – This 414-mike dirt road from Fairbanks to the North Slope of Alaska allows for trucks to supply oil and gas to businesses, and only has one fuel stop. This road features twists and winds around steep mountains, while recording the lowest temperature in American history at minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
California State Route 138 – Similar to Bolivia’s “Death Road” this road features twists and turns on a two lane road from Interstate 15 to the town of Palmdale. At one point there were 56 deaths and 875 injuries recorded during a one five year period.
I-95 in Connecticut – The most dangerous area of this road is in the 8-mile stretch near Norwalk where 735 crashes occur annually compared to less than 600 in similar size sections of other cities along this stretch. This stretch contains congested traffic, curves, and several hills.
U.S. 24 from Fort Wayne to Toledo – The Toledo Blade newspaper reported that this road was known for its gruesome head-on collisions among tractor-trailer trucks moving materials from Indiana to Ohio. Up until 2012, this was a two lane road, which has seen been widened for safety reasons.
I-15 from Los Angeles to Las Vegas – Over eight million people drive back and forth from southern California to southern Nevada each year, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. This 180-mile stretch has more fatalities than any other area in the state of California, while half of the fatalities occupants were not wearing seatbelts. This stretch claimed 173 lives in a five year time period up to 2005.
