Northwest Mississippi Community College will add the onsite program at its campus in DeSoto County in spring.
The move is in response to trends in the northwest part of the state, says teacher Steve McDavid.
“With the rapid population growth in DeSoto County, there has been a corresponding growth in legal firms moving to the area,” McDavid told the Commercial Appeal. “It, therefore, makes sense to make these courses available where the students and needs come together.”
McDavid teaches paralegal technology at the community college, which is based in Senatobia.
The college’s main campus has a paralegal program, but the DeSoto campus in Southaven was limited to online courses. Those who wanted to learn in a classroom setting have had to travel to Senatobia. Under the new program, students will be able to take classes in torts, family practice and civil procedure at the Southaven satellite. The college intends to expand course offerings in fall 2013.
Paralegals perform a variety of law office duties; they also are known as legal assistants.
Demand has reached an “all-time high” for paralegals, McDavid said.
School officials say the program will enable students to work for law firms, corporate legal departments, insurance firms, legal assistance providers and government agencies. Paralegals in the South earn $48,000-$68,000, according to Paralegal Today: The Essentials by Roger Miller and Mary Meinzinger Urisko. The book was published in 2010.
