South Australia’s police force is currently the only territory in the country not to make statistics available online. Instead, officers in the area produce crime reports on a monthly basis, however the information has not been accessible via the web as of yet.
SA Police Commissioner Gary Burns told the Advertiser that police will publish crime rates on the same monthly basis in each of the 13 service areas.
Crimes covered will include break-ins, robberies, vehicle theft, as well as sexual and other assaults. Data will then be loaded onto both Facebook and Twitter.
Burns said police were still “in the process” of finalizing information that ought be included on the online format. They warned that the technology to properly catalogue and display the information will take time.
Acting Commissioner Grant Stevens stated that it was unlikely police would report crime by the suburb it occurred in any time in the near future; however, he did state that the SAPOL’s Business Information Section was “exploring the possibility of publishing selected crime statistics” for online purposes in 2031.
Burns stated that there had been a 40% drop in crime over the past decade, and he hoped that making such information available would help people in the area feel safer.
"It's also hoped with a clearer image of local crime available to the public they may be able to contribute to reducing crime by offering police solutions to tackling local crime," he said.
Burns made a point to note that the LSA would be accompanied by attached context in order to explain fluctuations in the data.
