Cap Suggested For Lawyer Fees by Qatari Advisory Council reports Multi Funding USA

(LegalLaw247.com, December 24, 2012 ) Kingston, NY -- The Qatari Advisory Council proposed that lawyers should not be able to charge fees to their clients of more than 10% of claims in both civil and commercial disputes.

After the suggested cap was made public, there was immediate backlash from lawyers who found the proposal unfair and idiotic. With the ever-increasing cost of living combined with the rising cost of overhead expenses in the field of law,

At the moment, there is no cap on lawyer fees and are up to the individual lawyer and his or her client, but recently, the legislation has been scrutinized, amended, approved by the State Cabinet, and sent to the Advisory Council for further recommendations. The draft proposes that lawyers should not be allowed to charge more than 20% of claims to their clients, but the Advisory Council has since reduced the percentage to 10.

With the reduced percentage, many people have spoken out against the new legislation including Dr. Saud Al Azba who said, “Such recommendations are unfair. They wouldn’t be accepted by our fraternity.”

According to Al Azba, it is only in rare cases that disputes can run into the millions of riyals, while the majority of them never surpass 50,000 riyals. If the percentages were to be lowered so drastically, lawyers would not be able to survive, let alone pay their overhead costs and other basic expenses.

For Al Azba, the reduction in percentage comes at a terrible time, and he cannot understand why such restrictions would be put in place in such a tough economy to survive in. Lawyers could simply not work anymore because they would not be able to make enough money to support themselves or their families. The reduction is clearly an action to help people who have trouble affording lawyers, but it could end up backfiring on the entire system.

Dr. Al Azba also found it peculiar that lawyers were the only one being targeted instead of medical and engineering professionals for example saying, “So why target lawyers alone?”
