Dangerous Chemical Found In Fort Jackson Groundwater Details Standeffer and Harbin

(LegalLaw247.com, November 19, 2013 ) Columbia, S.C – Recent tests have confirmed that ground water at Fort Jackson is contaminated with traces of a caustic pollutant commonly associated with military ammunition. Traces of the pollutant were found at the southern boundary of the base, however, nearby private wells will not be tested until early December pending permission from property owners.

Tests performed at the fort’s southern boundary and McCrady Training Center confirmed the chemical, however, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) released a letter alleging that the military may have known about the contamination for more than a year before telling the agency.

Royal Demolition Explosive (RDX) is a man-made compound that is typically used in ammunition. Although only small traces of the substance were found, the United States Centers for Disease Control warns that when larger amounts of the chemical are ingested in can cause seizures. RDX has also been linked to cancer in laboratory animals and is considered a possible human carcinogen.

According to the DHEC the military learned about the contamination in the summer of 2012 and requested that the fort begin testing any wells downhill from the contaminated area within 15 days. It is expected that the base will release more details about their findings and answer questions from the media on Friday, November 22nd, 2013.

It is unknown how many people get their drinking water from private wells near Fort Jackson as well as how many people use it for watering their lawns and gardens as well as feeding livestock.
