Last year in December, Sam Ward gave birth to her first child. In order to get fit and gather people who are willing for a 3km run together, Ward decided to organize a running group to run at Harrogate’s Stray. However when the council of Harrogate came to know about the group, which reportedly meets every Thursday evening, they contacted Sam Ward and asked for a proof of public liability insurance and a proper leadership qualification from any member of the running group to ensure the protection of the people and land.
Ward was shocked to hear about the requirements and stated that it’s just a support group which gives an opportunity and easy option to the people who are unable to travel long distances offered by some of the formal group around the city.
“It was a bit of a shock because, to me, it’s not a club, it’s a support group. I don’t ever say that I teach people and I don’t charge. I send an email every week to say ‘You run at your own risk’,” Ward was reported as saying by yorkshirepost.co.uk.
A spokesman from the Harrogate Borough Council said there are some certain procedures and rules for every organized groups to follow when using council land, not only for the protection of the land, but also for the protection of the group members in case of any injury or accidents.
Although Sam Ward is already planning on taking some running course for leadership and did not want to fall out with the Harrogate Borough Council, however she was aware of the potential cost associated with the insurance.
