New California Law Helps Home-Based Food Businesses Flourish reports Compact-Kitchen.com

(LegalLaw247.com, October 02, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- In August, the California State Assembly passed new legislation that made it legal for small-scale cottage industries specializing in baked goods and other home-prepped foods. This is a big step for California and they now join the ranks of 30 other states that have already legalized this for homemade goods being sold.

The legislation is intended for “homemade goods” like cookies, brownies, jams, jellies, pies, dried teas, home roasted coffee beans, and so forth. Signed by the governor last week, The California Homemade Food Act or AB1616 makes way for “...Home cooks of California to make and sell a wide range of foods without having to invest in commercial kitchen space or comply with the zoning and regulatory measures that govern larger producers and producers of meat and dairy products, which are specifically omitted in this law,” according to a report in the Christian Science Monitor.

The goal of the law is to stimulate “micro-enterprise” and build small businesses in local communities, while still protecting the consumer from “artisan foods that contain potentially hazardous ingredients like primary oils, meat, and dairy.” The new law also helps small business owners get started faster. For many small businesses, investors and bank loans are out of reach. The costs of funding the tools needed to open the doors to your home bakery for example are just out of reach.

The California Homemade Food Act (AB1616) goes into effect in January 2013 and will help the local business owners and communities across California put people back to work which will further strengthen local communities through the sales of locally made, homemade foods.
