The Edwards Law Firm Warns Drivers of the Dangers of Texting While Driving After State Ban is Derailed

(LegalLaw247.com, April 25, 2013 ) Oklahoma City, OK – For the third time this year a proposal to ban texting while driving has been derailed by the Oklahoma House of Representatives. The most recent amendment, brought forth by Democratic Representative Curtis McDaniel, was postponed with a 49-37 vote on April 23rd, 2013.

McDaniel initially brought forward the initiative as its own bill and it was passed forward through a House committee but was never brought to the House floor. He tried adding the ban to an amendment soon after, but the passage of the ban failed again.

Across the United States 39 states have banned texting and driving due to how distracted drivers become while attempting to send or read a text message. According to researchers from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute a driver is 23 times more likely to be involved in an auto accident while texting.

Texting while driving requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention which means that drivers are taking all their attention off the road. In 2010 approximately 18% of all injury crashes reportedly involved a distracted driver.

A recent survey by AT&T found that the number of adults who text and drive is growing and more than half of adult respondents admitted to texting and driving although 98% knew it was something they were not supposed to be doing.

Earlier this year supporters of the texting while driving ban convened in Oklahoma City to voice their support of the bill, but their cries were not heard as the ban has yet to be passed.

Distracted driving is a serious but also preventable issue and motorists should be aware of the dangers of picking up their cell phone while behind the wheel. If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident caused by a distracted driver, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical bills, lost wages, and more.
