Brighton Council to Pass Measures for Transgender Citizens

The move is considered among a raft of new changes that are being introduced by the Brighton and Hove City Council after the general overview of the services was put into place regarding trans persons.

The council's current policy and resources committee recently made the choice to approve measured that included plans to GP surgeries and remove sexes from its their personal logs.

At the same time, gender neutral toilets are being introduced across the municipality, while special trans swimming sessions are said to be in the future from the Brighton swimming pool.

A Newhaven resident, 79-year-old Ruth Rose, was born a man and has advised the council on the particular policies. She stated “It can be difficult in GP surgeries – I am not recognized. If I put in female I am not found, if I put in male – which I am not – I am not found. You have to decide between one sex or the other sex depending on what stage of your transition you are at.

She continued by stating, “In some situations, for example when you are getting your bins collected, does it matter if you are male or female? Women who have changed sex have, in the past, been bullied going into the ladies’ toilets. This happened some years ago in Peacehaven.”
