Data Shows Majority of Workplace Deaths Caused by Asbestos

(LegalLaw247.com, May 02, 2013 ) England, UK -- Hughes Blier was an experienced construction worker who had plenty of years under his belt on the job when he stepped onto a ladder that was not firmly attached to the wall. The ladder collapsed on Blier, and he fell 2.9 meters to the ground. Four days later, Blier died, finally succumbing to brain trauma.

The death in the workplace in Quebec remains a reminder of a grim reality of the work place. Blier was just one of 211 Quebecois who died on the job and in the workplace in 2012. There were even more that died in 2011. They each died from being crushed by rock and steel, electrocuted by voltage lines, struck by falling machinery, or in standard falls. However, what may come as a surprise to many, is the at many others of the workplace deaths come from on-job related illness. In 2011, the breakdown cam in that only 68 died of such falls and electrocutions, while 136 died from work-related illnesses.

It is not just any type of illness either. Nearly nine out of every 10 workplace illnesses in Quebec are caused due to exposure of asbestos. The Asbestos mining in Canada has come to an end with Parti Quebecois government's canceling the last year of a loan for the mining company. Still, asbestos will continue to kill workers mined or handled on construction sites.

Last year, for the first time, the Quebec flag was lowered to half-staff at the National Assembly for a day of commemoration for workers who have died on the job. It is a day used by workers, unions, and Quebec's workplace health and safety officials to remind all of the prevalence of workplace deaths.

“We want everyone to feel that workplace safety is their business,” said Michel Després, head of the Commission de la santé et de la sécurité au travail (CSST) on Tuesday as the agency launched its 2013 prevention campaign. “Unfortunately, too few people are aware of the number and frequency of workplace accidents,” he said. Quebecers have to make workplace safety a social value, he added. They have to develop a “culture of prevention.”
