The Highway Patrol’s Reconstruction Team found no signs that Safford’s car slowed down or braked before slamming into Carter’s vehicle. Unfortunately Carter was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and his airbags did not deploy. Carter was taken to Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center after the accident where he was later pronounced dead.
Safford was charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and a texting while driving charge is pending. In North Carolina it is illegal for any driver to text or read a text message while driving.
