Millions of Americans Will Hit the Road on Memorial Day Weekend Warns Mike Lewis Attorneys

(LegalLaw247.com, May 25, 2013 ) Winston-Salem, NC – For many people Memorial Day weekend kicks off summer travel and according to AAA more than 31 million Americans will drive at least 50 miles to their destination this weekend. An additional 1.3 million persons are expected to use other modes of transportation such as buses, trains, and ferries. AAA Carolinas believes that more than 897,000 drivers will be traveling between Thursday and Tuesday.

In anticipation of the increase in motorists the North Carolina Department of Transportation will be halting road construction until Wednesday May 29th with the exception of U.S. 1 north of Southern Pines, U.S. 158 in Elizabeth City and U.S. 17 in Jacksonville. Additionally the weekend races at Carolina Motor Speedway are expected to cause delays on Interstate 85, U.S 29, and N.C 49. It is likely that lower gas prices will produce an abundance of holiday travelers.

The boost of travel only increases the risk of drivers getting involved in a serious car accident. More than 208,000 vehicle crashes were reported throughout the state in 2011 with 34% of all fatal wrecks being caused by speeding. On Memorial Day weekend 2011 more than 1,400 collisions were reported of which 136 were alcohol-related.

Mike Lewis Attorneys would like to remind motorists to not drink and drive and be mindful of your fellow motorists. If you or a loved one is injured in a motor vehicle collision this Memorial Day, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical bills, lost wages, and more.
