One Million Dollars worth of Jewelry Stolen in Cannes Hotel Room

(LegalLaw247.com, May 26, 2013 ) New York, NY -- French officials said Friday that the hotel room of an employee of Chopard, a Swiss jewelry and watching making business was broken into and over $1 million worth of jewelry was stolen in a very well-planned robbery.

On Thursday evening, thieves stole a safe from the Novotel Hotel room containing hundreds of jewelry and watch items making away with most of the festival sponsor’s items. During that time, the Chopard employee was hosting a gala event at a far more expensive hotel, the Cannes.

Chopard has been known to loan jewelry for famous Hollywood events and personally to A-List celebrities including Julianne Moore. Several stars wore Chopard jewelry during the Cannes festival, but Raffaella Rossiello told reporters in a brief statement Friday that none of the jewelry stolen was set to be worn by any actresses.

Bernard Mascarelli, commander and judicial police spokesperson said there wasn’t an exact numerical value placed on all the jewelry that was stolen. While some reports show that the estimated value was over $1.4 million, Rosiello assures everyone that the value of the jewelry in the safe was far less than the jewelry worn by actresses on the red carpet. No word was given as to why the jewelry was taken to the festival in the first place.

Mascarelli did say that the theft happened between 7 p.m. Thursday and 3 a.m. on Friday, and investigators are still sorting out video surveillance footage and interviewing potential witnesses in the case.
