Zimmerman Defense Team Hopes Female Jurors Key to Success

(LegalLaw247.com, June 28, 2013 ) Sydney, Australia -- According to one defense expert, the six women who have been chosen to sit on the jury for the George Zimmerman case may be sympathetic to the former neighborhood watchmen. The women’s views on guns, crime, and community protection are likely relevant to what will be discussed in deliberation rather than race or gender.

Zimmerman is accused of a young man who, after the fact, was found to be unarmed. The 29-year-old has claimed that he was acting in defense as he killed Trayvon Martin during a brief altercation between the two.

According to Jose Baez, a Florida defense attorney, the jury is a slam dunk for the defense. Baez worked as counsel for the Casey Anthony case. The Florida mother was acquitted in her trial following the death of her daughter, Caylee.

"I think the defense clearly won the day on this one," Baez said. "Any way you slice and dice it,this is a defense jury."

The Zimmerman case has a particularly divisive to it, as the jury is not concerned with if Zimmerman shot Martin, but rather if he was justified in doing so. For jurors, the understanding of appropriate force and the right to defend one's self comes into primary focus. Two women on the jury are reportedly familiar with guns, and one had stated she has held a permit to carry a concealed weapon. The fact the weapon she is okayed to carry is similar to the one Zimmerman utilized is particularly emboldening to the defense's case.

Much has been made of the fact that the jury has a large number of female jurors. However, some may assume it will not be a lock for the defense. While women may be more interested in community safety and defense, they can also empathize with the fact Trayvon was someone's son and family member. This could work directly against the defense.
