Riddle & Brantley Warns Travelers to Watch for Goldsboro Rockslides

(LegalLaw247.com, August 22, 2013 ) GOLDSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina Department of Transportation officials confirmed there are approximately 50 truckloads of fallen rock and debris to be removed from I-40 West before traffic can resume following a rock slide that took place Monday, August 19.

The personal injury law firm Riddle & Brantley would like to remind drivers to be aware while driving through North Carolina’s mountainous regions, especially when conditions are right for falling rocks and debris. The likelihood of a rock slide increases sharply with heavy rainfall, and the area’s mountainous regions have experienced a great deal recently.

The section of I-40 where the rockslide occurred is curving road, much of it cut through the mountainside which contributes to the area’s tendency toward falling rocks. When driving through the area, exercise caution in wet conditions and be mindful of speed limits.

Known locally as The Gorge, the area in question stretches from Waynesville to the state line of Tennessee. Joel Setzer, assistant division engineer for the NCDOT said, “This particular spot is one of our areas of highest concern,” as this region has a history of rock slide activity.

Falling rocks can do very serious damage to passing vehicles and vehicle occupants, and drivers who behave negligently by not practicing safe driving habits in these areas can cause further accidents.
