Emergency Responders Pushing For Child Safety Seat Use Reports The Eichholz Law Firm

(LegalLaw247.com, October 11, 2013 ) St. Helena Island, SC – A recent early morning car accident with young passengers has prompted emergency responders on St. Helena Island to remind drivers of the importance of child safety seats.

The accident involved a woman and four children; two of the children were not wearing seatbelts nor were they in child safety seats causing them to suffer serious injuries.

According to emergency responders they rarely see children not situated in a car seat however a car accident only needs to happen once for a child to suffer debilitating and life-threatening injuries. Officials are urging drivers to read the safety instructions for their child’s safety seat and ensure that they are using it properly.

According to emergency responder Lee Levesque "Beaufort county ems has a staff of people who are trained to install car seats appropriately, doesn't matter the type or the manufacturer, they can do that for you, and in fact they do that once a month or by appointment.....for whoever would be interested in that," he told WSAV3.

In South Carolina children up to 1 year of age that weigh less than 20 pounds must be secured in a rear-facing child seat while those between 1 and 5 years of age between 40 and 80 pounds must be restrained in a belt-positioning booster seat.

Furthermore, children under the age of 6 are not permitted to sit in the front seat of a vehicle. Anyone who violates these laws is subject to being fined $150.

If you or a loved one has been injured in an auto accident caused by another individual’s negligence, the victim may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and more. An experienced Beaufort car accident attorney can help you determine what your legal rights are.
