Two Arrests Made in Connection with Suicide of Bullied Teen Reports Gordon & Doner

(LegalLaw247.com, October 16, 2013 ) Orlando, FL – The death of Rebecca Ann Sedwick brought bullying to the front lines in Polk County and now the sheriff’s office has arrested two girls in connection with Sedwick’s suicide.

On September 10th Rebecca Ann Sedwick jumped to her death from a tower that was less than a mile from her home. As a student of Crystal Lake Middle School in Lakeland she was bullied mercilessly by two girls in particular. Now at the ages of 12 and 14 these two girls have been arrested and charged with aggravated stalking.

According to the authorities several students corroborated the story that these two girls had repeatedly harassed Sedwick in and out of school. In one instance the 12-year-old started a physical altercation with Sedwick and was suspended from school. Sedwick was verbally harassed in and out of school and consistently received messages online and on her cell phone from these two bullies.

Sedwick changed schools in an attempt to get away from the bullying and then in December she was hospitalized under the state’s Baker Act after her parents noticed signs of self-harm. Eventually her parents decided to home school her until she enrolled in Lawton Chiles Middle Academy but the bullying continued.

The two girls were arrested on Monday night and detained at the county's juvenile assessment center, but were released to their parents and are now under house arrest.

The Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up for All Students Act requires school districts to adopt an official policy prohibiting bullying and harassment on school grounds, at school-sponsored events and through the use of school-network computers.

If you know someone who has been the victim of bullying, they may be entitled to compensation for pain and suffering, injuries sustained, and more. An experienced South Florida personal injury attorney can help you determine if you may be eligible to make a claim.
