Furthermore, a study involving U.S. patients that was funded by the US Food and Drug Administration, and published in the Journal of the American Medical Associations Internal Medicine journal, demonstrated that hip replacements were more likely to fail in women than in men.

The Associated Press report also indicated that women patients had an increased chance to require revision surgery doe to a hip implant failure during the first three years. In fact, the study indicated that the metal-on-metal hip implants actually failed twice as much in women than in men.

While research included over 35,000 surgeries at over 46 hospitals, over a time span of three years, it found that 2.3 percent of women, and 1.9 percent of men had undergone revision surgery due to broken bones, infection, instability, and loosening of the implant.
