On December 5th James Stanton, a court-appointed special master, will conduct hearings on certain motions of remand involving Pinnacle lawsuits removed from other state courts.
More than 5,000 cases have been filed in a Texas federal court alleging that the Pinnacle hip implants could lead to high levels of metal in the bloodstream. The cases filed allege that the metal-on-metal devices are designed similarly to the DePuy ASR hip replacements which was recalled in August 2010.
In 2007 a product complaint was reported to the Food and Drug Administration regarding the Pinnacle implant. According to a patient who received the hip implant, “Soon after these surgeries, I began experiencing pain and difficulty with my implants… I’ve experienced inflammation in my right and left thighs and right and left hip areas. I've also felt extreme discomfort when sitting, walking, or standing for periods of time. Diagnosis or reason for use: avascular necrosis, right hip. Avascular necrosis, left hip.”
In May 2013 Johnson & Johnson announced plans to phase out the sale of metal-on-metal and ceramic-on-metal hip replacements, including the Pinnacle system.
