Charleston Restaurant Owners Setback from Freedom Industries Chemical Spill

(LegalLaw247.com, January 18, 2014 ) CHARLESTON, WV – On Thursday, January 09, 2014, President Barack Obama signed a West Virginia Emergency Declaration for nine counties in West Virginia. This occurred after 7,500 gallons of chemicals leaked into the Elk River at Freedom Industries, just downstream from the West Virginia American Water Co.

Following the chemical spill, 300,000 residents were without a water source, while dozens of schools, businesses, and restaurants across the nine effected counties were forced to close.

By Sunday, January 12, many restaurants in Charleston were allowed to reopen after assuring officials of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department that a secured source of portable water was being used.

According to Keeley Steele, owner of the Bluegrass Kitchen, “It feels very expensive.” Referring to buying hundreds of bottles of water to reopen her Charleston restaurant, saying “This is all coming at such a huge cost.”

This was not the only restaurant affected by the Freedom Industries chemical spill; TripAdvisor alone lists 252 restaurants in the Charleston, WV area, while dozens more are not listed, and without clean water supplies.

Area restaurants are losing thousands of dollars after being forced to closed, which directly threatens the restaurant owners and employees way of life.
