More Bikes, More "Yikes!"

(LegalLaw247.com, November 06, 2014 ) Salt Lake City, UT -- Bicycling has recently seen a significant growth in Utah for people of all ages. Children are riding bikes to commute to school, and for simple fun, while competitive cyclists train on roads and take rides through Utah's many canyons. The number of people using bicycling as a form of transportation to get around in the area is increasing daily. This growing increase in popularity has led to bicycles and cars constantly interacting on Utah's roadways.

At the same time, now that we have come to the end of daylight savings time, it has begun to get darker not long after 5 p.m. when most people are leaving work. During this commute home, pedestrians and cyclists without lights and reflective gear are becoming nearly impossible to see by drivers.

Over the last year, there have been three times as many bike fatalities after sunset as there are in the daylight in the state of Utah. A group of transportation organizations including Salt Lake City Transportation, Bike Utah, University of Utah Commuter Services and UTA have partnered to help make a difference and lower the number of bicycle related accidents. This group will be providing individuals with free bicycle lights to help with visibility issues. Not only has this been a good idea and highly effective, but it’s also a state law to have a headlight, taillight and reflectors if you're riding in the dark, or in times of low visibility.

"A bike, for a lot of people, is their only mode of transportation,” said Salt Lake City Transportation Planner Alexis Verson. “They have to use it at night sometimes; they want to be safe. Bikers visibility increases two or three times if you have lights,” Verson claimed.

For injuries that have been sustained in bicycle accidents, both the rider and the other party have hope for possible compensation. The law office of Craig Swapp & Associates is currently accepting calls for all victims in these cases. His office can be contacted by using their free chat system at www.craigswapp.com.
