Last January the KDPS aided stranded travelers by providing them food and shelter while they awaited a late night bus delayed by inclement weather. The 20 travelers had been waiting inside a bus station that was about to close. The temperature at the time stood close to zero.
“It is this type of community relationship building that warranted our first award,” said Vistelar CEO Al Oelschlaeger. “In today’s tense police/community climate around the nation, Kalamazoo is setting the standard for how to protect and serve.”
Vistelar began training the entire staff in Verbal Defense & Influence in 2013. Following the training, Vistelar and KDPS have maintained a strong relationship and continue to communicate and share ideas regarding how to continually enhance police/community relations.
To that end, the department started a newsletter called the “WOW Bulletin” that shares stories of positive police interactions with members of the public. Also, it launched an online forum where citizens can submit feedback about specific officers and situations.
Kalamazoo’s Captain Jim Mallery will be participating in a first of a webinar series entitled “Enhancing Police-Community: Relations: Keeping Everyone Safer,” held on Wednesday, December 10th at 12:00 p.m. CST. The webinar is free and available at www.policecommunityrelations.org.
