American Dog Owners Should Be Aware Of New Leash Laws When They Travel To Canada.

(LegalLaw247.com, July 16, 2015 ) Santa Fe, New Mexico -- Toronto lawmakers implement a new enforcement to keep pets tethered to their owners in public space. The regulation will be effective as of this summer and the disobedient dog owners will face a fine up to $360.

The move from Toronto makes this city join the trend with other many municipalities in U.S.. There have been hundreds of campaigns to educate people about importance of leashing their dogs in public properties. However, it is still a rare enforcement that Canadian municipalities make and American travelers should be aware of it.

Toronto makes this effort due to a more than 1,000 complaints the city received from people. Majority of complaints are from people who have small children. When the dogs suddenly runs up to children, no matter the size of the dogs, it is a frightening moments for both children and the parents.

Uncontrollable canines also pose a safety hazards to runners, bicyclers and other animals. There are a case reported that an anxious dog became aggressive when it saw a bicycler run pass. The dog owner tried to hold it with a retractable leash but the plastic button was suddenly broken. The dog managed to bit the bicyclist on shoes and made him fall out. Retractable and long leashes are now banned in many public spaces.

Dog owners are now advised to possess at least one 6-foot leash when they want to walk their dogs in public. The leash should be sturdy and checked periodically for any signs of wear. A premium nylon dog leash is highly recommended.
