New Hampshire To Treat Fatal Overdoses As Murders, Drug and Alcohol Rehab New Hampshire Responds

(LegalLaw247.com, March 08, 2016 ) Manchester, NH -- According to The Guardian, New Hampshire state attorneys are attempting to change the way police approach fatal drug overdoses. The new initiative would treat cases of overdose deaths as murders, with the drug provider as the killer. With opioid overdoses increasing across the country, and in New Hampshire in particular, state officials and law enforcement authorities are attempting to make those responsible for the supply of drugs such as heroin and fentanyl culpable to second degree murder. Supporters believe this will be an effective means of reducing drug dealing while opponents claim it is nothing more than scare tactics which will not effectively reduce the overdose epidemic in New Hampshire.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab New Hampshire, which provides a multitude of services including heroin rehab in New Hampshire, opposes these measures. Recognizing that this desperate attempt at a quick remedy is underdeveloped and poorly constructed, Drug and Alcohol Rehab New Hampshire urges the state attorneys and legislators to establish better programs for heroin rehab in New Hampshire instead of establishing laws which will only serve to worsen the state's failing prison system.

A representative of Drug and Alcohol Rehab New Hampshire comments,

"The threat of murder charges is not enough to discourage individuals who have been programmed to believe their only means of survive and self-support is through drug dealing. Our prison system is already dealing out severe prison sentences to non-violent drug offenders. While we understand the outcry of drug dealers to be held accountable for their contribution to the substance abuse epidemic, our current means are ineffective if the true intent is nationwide recovery. Without providing rehabilitation for both people with substance abuse disorders and drug dealers, we are doing nothing to end this vicious cycle. Our efforts are better employed when focused on healing rather than punishment."
