Welfare Drug Tests Coming Back Clean, Drug Rehab Nashville Comments

(LegalLaw247.com, March 08, 2016 ) Nashville, TN -- Kingsport Times News reports that less than 0.2 percent of drug tested welfare applicants have tested positive since the drug testing law was implemented in July of 2014. Of the the more than 39,000 people who have applied for welfare since the law was enacted, only 64 have tested positive for narcotics, as reported to the Department of Human Services. The report also notes that 116 people refused testing, thereby disqualifying themselves from public assistance.

As a drug treatment facility in Nashville, Drug Rehab Nashville supports all endeavors made to improve the health and well-being of our communities. However, Drug Rehab Nashville does not support the criminalization or punishment of those struggling with substance abuse disorders. Drug Rehab Nashville encourages the legislators behind this law to reconsider using those funds for treatment rather than punishment.

A representative of Drug Rehab Nashville comments,
"While it is important to identify individuals in need of assistance overcoming substance abuse, drug testing with the intent of barring public relief funding is a questionable practice at best. While we can certainly understand not wanting government dollars to assist in the ever-growing drug abuse problem in Tennessee, making survival more difficult by withholding aid will prove more detrimental than beneficial. Enacting an amendment which would allow those who failed to receive assistance with proof of rehab completion or enlistment in a support group would increase the effectiveness of this bill."
