Talcum Powder Ovarian Cancer Lawsuits In U.S. Make Waves With U.K. Charities, Southern Med Law Reports

According to a report from The Telegraph, both Ovarian Cancer Action and Target Ovarian Cancer have advised against the genital-application of talc-based powders for feminine hygiene, while at the same time they reassured women that the any risk of ovarian cancer from such products is low. A third group, Ovacome, has published a Fact Sheet that details existing research into the possible association between talcum powder and ovarian cancer.

In the U.S., Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of Shower-to-Shower and Baby Powder talc-based powders, is facing more than 1,200 talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits filed on behalf of women who allegedly developed ovarian cancer due to their regular and repeated use of the company’s products for feminine hygiene purposes. The talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuit complaints assert that research suggesting a possible link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer dates back to 1971, and accuse Johnson & Johnson of failing to warn women about this potential danger.

In 2013, a jury in the U.S. District Court, District of South Dakota, heard evidence in the nation’s first talcum powder lawsuit, and ruled that regular and repeated genital application of Johnson’s Baby Powder contributed to the plaintiff’s ovarian cancer. However, no damages were awarded in the case.

This year, however, two juries in St. Louis, Missouri, involved in talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay millions in compensatory and punitive damages to plaintiffs. In February, the family of an ovarian cancer victim who died after using the company’s talc products for more than three decades was awarded $72 million in one talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuit. And in April, a second jury in St. Louis awarded $55 million to another South Dakota talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuit plaintiff, after determining that her decades-long use of Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powders had also contributed to her ovarian cancer.

Court records from around the country indicate that Johnson & Johnson will face several more talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits trials in the coming year, including a third talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuit that will get underway in Missouri in September. Jury selection is also slated to begin on October 11th in a talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuit trial that will take place New Jersey’s Atlantic County Superior Court. The case selected for trial was filed on behalf of a woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 36, and will be the first in a state multidistrict litigation that currently houses around 200 lawsuits.

Finally, the Washington D.C. Superior Court is scheduled to convene a trial on April 17, 2017 in the case of a regular talcum powder user who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2013.
