Testing Street Drugs On the Scene Poses Threats on Law Enforcement Officers

(LegalLaw247.com, August 12, 2016 ) Columbus, OH -- An Ohio Attorney General, Mike DeWine, has put out a statement advising officers to be cautious around highly addictive drugs. Usually, when officers tend to a drug related incident, the procedure is to test the drug on site to be sure of what it is exactly. Lately, street drugs have been substituted with stronger substances that can do a great deal of harm if it so much as comes in contact with skin. "We think the old practices of field testing is just not a good idea if they can be avoided", DeWine suggested. The DEA's Special Agent Rich Isaacson agrees with DeWine's opinion and feels like this initiative should be taken into serious consideration:" just a small amount absorbed into the skin can kill you."

Although lots of officers use gloves for protection it may not be enough. DeWine says: "it's just too high of a risk" because this type of angle has not actually happened yet in any police department. In the past wearing just gloves wouldn't be such a big issue but drug dealers and producers have improved the formulas so much that they have been proven to be a lethal combination.

A representative from Drug and Alcohol Rehab Columbus said: " in drug related cases, it's better to be safe than sorry. These officers shouldn't have to put their lives on the line for a little sprinkle of a loose substance. Finding a safer procedure to test drugs on site should be the next motive for all state that suffer from high velocity overdose deaths."
